Tame An Animal Best Animals: Role-Based Tier List (October 2026)

Most tier lists for this game are fiction. The developer has never published an animal list, so anyone ranking forty named pets by letter grade is ranking things they did not verify. We are not going to do that.

What we can do is build the ranking method and score the animals you actually own. It is the same approach used in games with ten times the player base: test three things, weight them by what your team is missing, and rerank when the build changes. Tame An Animal updates roughly every week, so a list frozen in October will be wrong by December no matter who wrote it.

Build tested: update published October 26, 2026. Ranked: October 27, 2026. Next review: after the November 2 event ends.

Why role beats rarity

A rare animal that dies in two boss hits is worse than a common animal that survives the fight. Rarity tells you how hard something was to get; it does not tell you whether it holds aggro, whether its damage lands while you dodge, or whether it can be summoned again after a wipe.

Three roles cover almost every team:

  • Bruiser — front line, high health, holds the boss so you can attack.
  • Burst — high damage in a short window, best right after a stagger.
  • Support — ranged pressure, healing or buffs if the game has them.

Score your animals in each role and the "best animal" question becomes concrete: best for what?

The scoring rubric

Give every animal three scores from 1 to 5. Then weight them, because a 5 in survivability and a 5 in damage are not equally useful on a team that already has three damage dealers.

Axis What you measure How to measure it
Damage Time to kill a fixed low-level wild animal Three runs, average the seconds
Survivability Hits taken before it goes down Let one tank a low-level animal, count hits
Summon value Usefulness while you are also fighting Does it hold aggro, stay in range, need commands

Weight damage at 40%, survivability at 40% and summon value at 20% for a solo player. For dungeon groups, shift to 30/50/20, because a dead animal deals no damage and a wipe costs the whole run.

The 20-second test: pick one animal you can kill quickly, send your candidate at it alone, and time it. Do the same with your current best. The gap between the two is your real upgrade, and it is usually smaller than the rarity frame suggests.

What the confirmed creatures tell us

The official art shows two animals. Neither has a published name or stat block, so treat these as archetypes with the art attached, not as a ranked list.

Art creature Archetype Expected role Confidence
Purple crystal wolf Large quadruped predator Bruiser, front-line pressure High — shown taking a tame directly
Blue crystal dragon Faceted winged creature Burst or support, late progression Medium — icon art only, no gameplay shown

The wolf appears in the main thumbnail being tamed on a lava causeway, which is where a new player would meet it: open ground, no water, a straight fight. The dragon appears only as Halloween icon art. That is a marketing choice, not proof that dragons are the strongest animals, but it is the strongest hint the developer has given.

How the tiers actually behave

Once you have scores, the letters mean something specific:

S — carries a dungeon. Highest weighted score, survives a boss fight without babysitting, damage still lands while you dodge. If you have one, build the team around it.

A — does one job very well. Either a wall that never dies or a damage unit that clears trash fast. A team of four A-role animals usually beats one S and three fillers.

B — usable until replaced. Fine in the open world, exposed in dungeons. This is where most new tames land, and there is no shame in it.

C — storage. Low numbers on all three axes, or a role you already cover twice. Keep one for collection value, release the rest.

Unranked — untested. Anything you have not run through the 20-second test belongs here. Do not promote an animal because it looked impressive in the tame animation.

Three teams that work

Solo progression. One bruiser, two burst, one flexible slot. You need the bruiser to hold aggro while you land hits, and burst to finish a weakened animal before it resets.

Duo dungeon. Each player brings one bruiser and one support or ranged. Two walls let you split boss attention; the ranged units keep damage flowing during dodges.

Full group (up to 12 players). Two or three dedicated bruisers, everyone else on burst, with at least one support per sub-group. In a 12-player server the failure mode is not low damage — it is everyone bringing damage and nobody holding the boss.

What to spend on first

If you are deciding between an animal unlock and a convenience pass, the pass usually wins early. Instant Tame and +100 Storage remove hours of friction, while a single strong animal does not fix a team that cannot survive a dungeon. +2 Equip Slots is the upgrade that changes the most runs, because it lets you bring a second role instead of a second damage dealer.

The Pegasus mount is currently off sale. Do not plan a build around it, and do not buy an account that claims to have one.

How this list will change

Three events will force a rerank, and you should expect all three:

  1. The November 2 event end. If CRYSTALCOVE animals are limited, their value after the event depends on whether new players can still obtain them.
  2. A weekly balance pass. Starbuilt Games has shipped updates almost every week since August 23. Damage numbers move.
  3. A dungeon rotation. New dungeons change which roles are mandatory, usually toward more survivability.

Check the build stamp at the top of this page against the game's update date before you trust a ranking. If the game updated after October 26, the numbers here are one patch old.

FAQ

What is the best animal in Tame An Animal? Unconfirmed by the developer. By role, you want the highest weighted score in your weakest slot — usually a bruiser if you play solo, a support if you play in groups. There is no verified single best animal.

Is the crystal dragon the strongest? Unknown. It is the most detailed creature in official art, which suggests a high tier, but no stats have been published.

Does rarity matter? Less than role. A high-rarity animal that cannot hold aggro loses to a common bruiser in a dungeon.

How often should I rerank? After every weekly update that touches combat, and after each event ends. Re-run the 20-second test on your top three animals; it takes a minute.

Should I keep every animal I tame? No. Storage is capped and the +100 Storage pass exists because it fills. Keep one per role plus anything you have not tested.
