Backseat Rally Beginner Guide: First 30 Minutes

Backseat Rally is a co-op rally racer, not a lap-circuit game. You drive point to point, a co-driver reads the road ahead from the passenger seat, and a run is graded on whether you kept the car out of the trees. The first thirty minutes decide whether you spend the next ten hours fighting the handling or learning the stages.

What the game actually is

Two to six racers per event, on a 1.5 to 2.9 km point-to-point stage, in rain, snow or mud, with medals or head-to-head as the game mode. Ten cars, five stages, an AI co-driver, and level gates on every car above the starter.

Minute 0-5: settings before your first stage

Open the menu and change three things. The defaults are fine for a demo, not for a rally stage.

Setting Options What to pick first Why
Handling Arcade / Sim Arcade Sim asks for smooth brake release you do not have yet
Brake assist Auto / On / Off On It catches the panic brake that sends you into a bank
Co-driver calls Simple / Full Full Simple hides the corner numbers you need to learn

Full calls are noisier, and that is the point in week one. You are not driving fast yet; you are learning how the road is described so the same words mean the same thing on all five stages.

Minute 5-15: learn what the co-driver is saying

Rally calls are a compressed language, and Backseat Rally uses the standard shape: a direction, a severity number, and often an instruction between corners. The number is the gear you would ideally take the corner in. Six is flat out, one is a hairpin.

Call Meaning What to do
SIX RIGHT Near flat, gentle Lift slightly, no brake
FOUR LEFT Medium Brake to fourth, turn in early
THREE RIGHT TIGHTENS Medium, then tighter Brake more than the number suggests
ONE LEFT Hairpin Slowest corner, handbrake optional
CREST Blind brow Stay straight, expect the road to drop
DON'T CUT Keep off the inside The inside has a rock, log or ditch
INTO Two corners in sequence The exit of the first sets up the second

Two calls deserve respect from run one: DON'T CUT and CREST. Cutting a marked corner in this game can put you in a ditch or a wall, and a crest at speed will unload the car a beat before you expect it.

Call it back

Say each call out loud as it arrives. It feels silly for two stages and then it becomes checking, which is the whole skill the co-driver is teaching.

Minute 15-25: one stage, three runs

Do not tour the whole game in your first session. Pick Pine Forest, the default Stage Select route, and run it three times.

  1. Run one, survival. No timer pressure. Brake early, finish, note where you crashed.
  2. Run two, sectors. Use the results screen split into sectors 1-4. Restart the sector that lost the most time instead of the whole stage.
  3. Run three, timed. Call every corner, keep it clean, and see where the medal lands.

Gold on Pine Forest in the starter car is 1:12.0. You will not hit it on run three, and you should not try. Bronze or silver with a clean sheet is the right result for a first session.

Minute 25-30: spend nothing yet

The garage is tempting and the store is patient. Nothing you can buy in the first half hour is worth the CR.

  • Do not buy a car. The first unlock is level 3, and it comes from finishing stages, not from spending.
  • Do not buy a Car Crate. Crates contain parts and credits, never vehicles.
  • Do not chase codes. There are no verified Backseat Rally codes as of October 26, 2026.
  • Do not buy the Orkan 9S pass. It is the fastest car, and it will teach you nothing about the co-driver calls.

What you should do is finish the contracts board objective that overlaps with Pine Forest. A finish there pays 50 CR and 100 XP, and a stacked run with a new medal, a clean sheet, the daily bonus and a contract has been measured at 592 CR and 454 XP.

The level ladder, in plain terms

Level What opens Should you rush it?
3 Freccia HF Yes, first real upgrade
5 Rascal S Only for Sakura Pass
6 Saetta HF Yes, first AWD car
8 Falke E3 Optional, rear-drive character
10 Kaze RS Yes, best all-round free car
16 Raijin GS Yes, the free fast car
20 Kumo R1 Later, similar to Ocelot
24 Ocelot R1 Long-term target

Levels come from XP, and XP comes from finishing stages. Every detour into a different car before level 10 slows the ladder down.

Mistakes that cost the most

  1. Braking on the bridge. Pine Forest's log bridge unsettles the car. Be straight and off the brakes.
  2. Treating grass as a shortcut. Leaving the road for grass or bushes raises DANGER and costs time.
  3. Restarting the whole stage for one bad corner. Use sector practice and the checkpoint reset instead.
  4. Buying crates before level 6. The duplicate refund floor is 50 CR, which is a slow way back.
  5. Switching cars every session. Mastery is per car, and a half-learned garage is slower than one familiar car.
  • The controls guide covers every key, controller mapping, private servers and playing with friends.
  • The stages guide has the danger points and the fast line for all five routes.
  • The cars tier list explains which level gate is worth reaching first.
  • The CR guide has the per-hour numbers once you want to farm.

FAQ

Is Backseat Rally free? Yes. The game is free to play, with Robux spent on the Starter Pack, VIP and the Orkan 9S game pass.

Can I play solo? Yes. Events run with two to six racers, and solo practice on a stage is how most players learn a route.

How long is a stage? Between 1.5 and 2.9 km. A clean Pine Forest run takes around 1:12 at gold pace.

Do I need a co-driver player? No. The co-driver is an AI in the passenger seat and calls the road for you.

What is the first car to unlock? The Freccia HF at level 3. It has 130 hp, front-wheel drive and a 177 km/h top speed.

How many players per server? Up to eight in a server, with two to six in a single event.
